Early Treatment

The goal of early or Phase 1 treatment is to manage the development of the jaws to make room for permanent teeth and improve how the upper and lower jaws fit together. While many issues can be addressed when the child is older, there are a few cases where it is advantageous to fix these problems early. This can maximize long term results and/or reduce overall cost of treatment. An upper jaw that is too narrow or a lower jaw that is not growing enough are examples of issues that might need to be treated early and can prevent more extensive treatment later.

Dr. Issa and Dr. Rayburn recommend an initial exam around the age of 7. This complimentary exam will give you the information you need to know that your child’s bite and teeth are developing correctly. If your child is not yet in need of treatment, he or she will become a member of our Growth and Development Club, where they’ll be monitored at no charge so that the doctors can assess their teeth and bite as they grow and make any recommendations that they feel would benefit. Some of the results of early treatment may be:

  • room for unerupted adult teeth
  • improved jaw growth to improve facial symmetry
  • reduced risk of trauma to protruding front teeth
  • maintenance existing space for the later eruption of teeth
  • reduced need for teeth removal

Between the ages of 11 and 15 is the most common time for orthodontic treatment, and for good reason. By age 12, most, if not all, of the permanent teeth are in place and crooked teeth, gaps and bad bites are highly visible. We can often take advantage of the remaining growth to make the necessary orthodontic corrections and create an exceptional smile for your child. Since many of their friends are in braces at the same time, most adolescents LOVE being part of the braces crowd. After school visits at Issa Orthodontics in Plano Texas can be lots of fun when kids see their friends from school, church or sports teams!

Please call our office to schedule your no-cost orthodontic evaluation for your child. It's not necessary to wait until all the baby teeth have been lost; in fact there are many advantages to you and your child when we are able to evaluate and plan the best time for treatment while the baby teeth are still present.

Adults need braces too! It's never too late to get the smile you've always wanted, or address tooth and bite alignment issues. "I wish I'd done this sooner!" is the comment we hear most often from adults after completing their orthodontic treatment. The benefits of orthodontic treatment for adults are many:

  • Improved smile and appearance
  • Increased confidence; no more hiding your smile!
  • Reduced tooth wear from mis-aligned teeth
  • Improved oral hygiene as it's easy to brush and floss aligned teeth
  • Improved peridontal (gum) health
  • Positive impact on bone loss
  • Improvement of TMJ disorders and their related symptoms such as headaches

Issa Orthodontics has numerous options for adult orthodontics including self-ligating metal braces, self-ligating clear braces, braces hidden behind the teeth, and Invisalign aligners. We can find a solution to fit your look and your lifestyle! With the use of the SureSmile Technology, your treatment can be completed faster than ever before. Dr. Issa or Dr. Rayburn will discuss each option with you so that together we can select the best option. Orthodontics can change your life, no matter how old or young you are!

Issa Orthodontics can give you the smile you want, without braces using Invisalign aligners. Invisalign treatment is nearly invisible, and gives you the freedom to eat whatever you want and freedom to brush and floss normally. Issa Orthodontics has been designated an Invisalign Premier Preferred Provider in recognition of their experience and continuing education with Invisalign and their level of experience makes your experience with Invisalign the best.

It's easy to get started. It all begins with your exam and diagnosis by Dr. Issa or Dr. Rayburn, and then photos, digital x-rays and impressions of your teeth. That information is then sent to Align Technology, the manufacturers of Invisalign, along with the doctor's treatment instructions. Dr. Issa and Dr. Rayburn then work closely with a technician at Invisalign to precisely design the movements for each tooth. This attention to detail is a critical part of Invisalign treatment with Dr. Issa and Dr. Rayburn. When they approve the final treatment design, that information is then manufactured as a finely calibrated set of aligners designed to move your teeth gradually into their finished positions. Call us if you want to find out more about Invisalign treatment at our Plano orthodontic office.

Invisalign Teen is a great alternative to braces for Plano Texas teenagers that is virtually invisible. It straightens your teeth with a series of clear, removable aligners—so you can continue brushing, flossing and eating the way you normally do. Without braces, it's easier to maintain great oral hygiene, which is definitely a plus for your social life. Being a teen is hard enough, getting a great smile doesn't have to be.

Two of the questions orthodontists are often asked by parents considering Invisalign for their teenager are " Will they wear them enough? and "Will they lose them?" We're happy to be able to reassure parents on both questions! Our experience at Issa Orthodontics has been that teens that have committed to Invisalign treatment rarely lose an aligner. And the excitement of feeling and seeing the movement of their teeth is a great motivator! In addition to that, we've got you covered:

  • Those little blue dots are also a compliance indicator for us, so that we can address any wear issues right away.
  • We provide up to 6 sets of replacement aligners at no charge in case of loss or damage.

Braces have changed a great deal in the past 20 years, and Dr. Issa continues to be at forefront of those changes that provide the best results in the shortest amount of time - and with the greatest comfort. The braces that we offer can be either metal or clear and on the front or back side of the teeth, depending on your preference. All of our braces incorporate smoother surfaces and are engineered for faster adjustments at each visit.

At your initial appointment you'll be able to check out all the options, and discuss what type of braces suit your lifestyle and look. If you prefer a removable, discreet solution, Dr. Issa is also a provider of Invisalign treatment and is happy to discuss that option with you as well.

Hidden Braces or Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are similar to traditional braces except that they are customized to attach to the inside of your teeth and are hidden from view. They are a great option for moderate to severe requirements and straighten your teeth without the look of traditional braces. Lingual braces are a discreet way to straighten your teeth and provide a perfect alternative to conventional braces for esthetically minded individuals. Lingual braces are "fixed" to the teeth so they stay in until treatment is complete.

We use the Incognito brand of lingual braces, providing you with a fully customized set of braces. The results are beautiful and the ease of wear is too because they are designed to fit your teeth and mouth perfectly. They are a great alternative when Invisalign is not an option for you.

SureSmile Technology: One of the advantages of orthodontic treatment at Issa Orthodontics is the use of the latest technology, Suresmile. Issa Orthodontics uses 3D digital modeling in conjunction with computerized robotics to produce customized archwires. This amazing technology, called SureSmile, creates more accurate treatment that is 30-40% faster than conventional orthodontics. With SureSmile, Drs. Issa and Rayburn virtually eliminate the need for much of the fine tuning involved in the later months of traditional orthodontics so your treatment finishes on time or earlier than you might have expected.

An independent study published in the World Journal of Orthodontics found that patients treated with SureSmile experienced overall reduced treatment time and a better quality outcome than those treated conventionally. The precision that is the basis of SureSmile technology creates a higher quality result. For you, that means a beautiful smile and a healthy mouth—both in less time than conventional braces.

Once your treatment is complete it's time for retention. At Issa Orthodontics, we believe retention is for life. In fact, it's so important we often include a "permanent" bonded retainer on the inside of your lower front teeth. And for your upper teeth, we provide retainers that you'll wear all the time for a couple of months after treatment and then only at night - for as long as you want to keep your teeth looking like they do the day you finish treatment. Below are some other helpful guidelines for your retainers:

  • Take your retainers out when eating, and always put retainers in their case! (Most appliances are lost in school l unchrooms or restaurants.)
  • Clean retainers with a soft toothbrush. Please do not use hot water. Brushing retainers removes the plaque, and eliminates odors. Efferdent® or other orthodontic appliance cleaners can also be used, but do not take the place of brushing.
  • When retainers are not in your mouth they should ALWAYS be in a retainer case. Pets love to chew on them, even pets who normally do not chew on other things! We've heard too many stories of dogs finding and destroying retainers that were left on a table or in a purse that they could reach!
  • Initially, you may find it difficult to speak with your retainers in your mouth. Practice speaking, reading, or singing out loud to get used to them faster.
  • Retainers are breakable, so treat them with care. If retainers are lost or broken call us during the next business day.
  • If you have any questions or concerns about your retainers, or your retainers need adjusting, call us. Do not try to adjust them yourself.
  • Always bring your retainers to your appointments.
  • Retainer replacement will incur an additional fee but with proper care they will last for years!
  • Keep retainers away from hot water, hot car dashboards, pockets, the washing machine, and napkins.
