Dentist versus Orthodontist

Dentists and orthodontists are practitioners who specialize in dental healthcare. Practitioners who study general dentistry are trained to diagnose and address conditions of your teeth, gums, tongue, and mouth.

We all are familiar with dentists and what they do; however, some may be a bit confused when they hear the word orthodontist. The confusion is immense as both a dentist and orthodontist treat the same dental issues (teeth and overall oral health). But both differ in specialization and the treatment they contribute to dental problems.

What Do Dentists Do?

As explained by the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), dentists treat patients’ overall oral health. Through routine checkups, dentists can detect and treat tooth decay, mild gum disease, and oral hygiene problems, and they can also remove teeth that are beyond saving. Services rendered by dentists normally focus on:

  • administering regular dental work, like check-ups, cleanings, and x-rays
  • teeth whitening or enhancing the color appearance of teeth
  • tooth extraction or removing broken teeth
  • cavity filling or treating decayed teeth
  • making bridges, crowns, or veneers
  • creating dentures or installing implants for lost teeth
  • conducting root canals
  • administering treatment for periodontal disease and gingivitis
  • informing patients regarding oral hygiene habits

If your dentist finds a problem that they aren’t equipped to treat, they will refer you to a dental specialist or orthodontist as necessary.

What does an orthodontist do?

Certified orthodontists are also trained to diagnose and treat oral health conditions of your teeth, gums, and mouth. But mainly, orthodontists focus on making sure your teeth and jaw are positioned perfectly.

Orthodontists do the following:

  • oversee facial growth (bite and jawline) in children
  • diagnose and treat malocclusions or misaligned teeth and jaws
  • formulate a treatment plan that includes braces and retainers
  • conduct teeth straightening surgery
  • place dental appliances, like braces, palatal expanders, orthodontic headgear, or Herbst appliances

Dr. Abdul Fatah Hanoun, DDS

DDS

Dr. Hanoun is thrilled to take care of your orthodontic needs in his office. He graduated in 1996 as a General Dentist with DDS. For over a decade, he practiced General Dentistry before returning to school and pursued his dream of becoming an Orthodontist. His rare, extensive education in Orthodontics, along with General and Cosmetic Dentistry, makes him a valuable asset to the team at Infinite Orthodontics.

After finishing his specialty training at the University at Buffalo, NY, he received his certificate of Proficiency in Orthodontics and obtained two Master’s degrees in orthodontics. Since 2007, he has concentrated on functioning solely as a specialist in Orthodontics.

Dr. Hanoun is extremely proud to be among the only 25% of orthodontists who have completed the needed clinical cases and passed all the supplementary exams to be a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. His achievement has been showcased in International orthodontic meetings and authorized him to publish articles in peer review journals and a chapter in an orthodontic book with more publication in progress.

Dr. Omar Issa, DDS, MS

Dr. Omar Issa, DDS, MS

DDS, MS

A known “science geek,” Dr. Issa loves the ever-changing area of orthodontics and technology that embodies the advanced care that his practice is recognized for. Either he’s at his computer studying the latest journal articles and courses or analyzing an Invisalign treatment plan, Dr. Issa believes he has to remain updated on the newest methods to provide exceptional treatment to his patients.

After graduating with honors and a BS in Dental Surgery from Cairo University, he completed a General Dentistry Residency at Cairo University Hospital. Dr. Issa then returned stateside to hasten his dental education at The University of Minnesota School of Dental Medicine. There, he got his Doctorate of Dental Surgery, Master of Science, and completed a Graduate Residency in Dentistry before entering and then completing the Orthodontic Residency Program for his Certificate in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. This educational attainment that included multiple residencies gives Dr. Issa a solid framework that he applies daily in his patient’s orthodontic treatment and provides him an accurate understanding when handling multi-disciplinary cases with general dentists and other experts.

Additionally, Dr. Issa has completed his certification by the American Board of Orthodontists. He is currently serving as the President of the Texas Association of Orthodontists.
